Bitcoin ETF's Nine-Day $3.1 Billion Streak Snaps as Fed Hike Bets Resurface

October 2, 2026

$148.7 million left U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs on October 1. That ended a nine-day inflow streak that had pulled $3.1 billion into the funds since mid-September. Fidelity's FBTC led the exit with $125.6 million in single-day withdrawals. BlackRock's IBIT shed $9.5 million. Bitwise's BITB lost $13.6 million.

The streak's end is not a collapse. It is a signal about what is competing for the same capital.

The Fed Fracture Behind the Outflow

Two forces are pulling institutions in different directions this week. Futures markets priced a 47.1% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike on October 28, per Bitfinex data. The 10-year Treasury yield sits at 5.17%, near 24-year highs. At that level, bonds are paying enough to make short-duration capital allocation decisions measurably different than they were six months ago.

Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan called last month's rate increase "a first step" and stated that at least another half percentage point of hikes would be needed to return inflation to the Fed's 2% target. Hours later, Fed Vice Chair Philip Jefferson signaled the opposite: the committee may need more time before raising rates again. Bitcoin is priced into the gap between those two positions.

The September nonfarm payrolls report, released at 8:30 AM Friday, is the next data point. Wall Street projected 84,000 jobs added and unemployment holding at 4.1% for the third consecutive month. A strong print raises October 28 hike odds. A weak one cuts them. Either outcome moves bitcoin.

What the Onchain Data Says

Despite the ETF pause, underlying accumulation is accelerating. Wallets holding between 10 and 10,000 BTC added 41,025 coins in the past ten days, bringing total holdings for that cohort to 13.64 million BTC, representing 67.93% of all circulating supply. Profit-taking from short-term holders is being absorbed by long-term buyers. The textbook STH-to-LTH transition is underway.

Bitcoin's daily RSI14 closed at 64.7 on October 1, elevated after Q3's 40% gain but still below the 70 exhaustion zone. Futures open interest reached $54.11 billion, up $1.71 billion in 24 hours. Total liquidations in the same period: $22.15 million. Leverage is building, but not yet at extension levels.

Strategy confirmed its holding of 846,000 BTC at a $63.8 billion cost basis, now valued at $71.5 billion. Michael Saylor posted "even more orange" this week, signaling another purchase. Economist Saifedean Ammous declared the treasury model unreplicable by any other company. That view is simultaneously bullish for Strategy and a constraint on the broader corporate adoption thesis. One fund manager flagged a counter-risk: servicing STRC preferred dividends may eventually require BTC sales, pushing the underlying asset lower.

Bearish risks are real and present. If the October 28 FOMC meeting delivers a hike, yields push higher and the financial conditions that supported Q3's 40% rally tighten further. If ETF outflows persist through next week, the divergence between institutional positioning and on-chain accumulation widens into a structural tension.

Bitcoin closed Q3 up 40% and remains 30% below its October 2025 high of $124,000 on Day 895 since the April 20, 2024 halving. Both of those facts are true at the same time.
