Strategy Chose $176 Million in Preferred Stock Buybacks Over Bitcoin

September 10, 2026

Strategy allocated $176.3 million to preferred stock buybacks between September 3 and September 7. Its Bitcoin position held flat at 845,050 BTC. No new coins purchased. The last BTC acquisition is in the red.

The Pause That Reveals

Michael Saylor built his company around a single proposition: Bitcoin is the best asset to hold, forever. That thesis faces a harder test this week. Instead of buying the dip, Strategy spent $176.3 million retiring its own preferred shares.

The company's preferred share classes carry mandatory dividends, a first call on cash before any BTC purchase, and the potential to compete directly with Bitcoin acquisition for liquidity. With $1.44 billion in flexible USD cash remaining, the choice was available. Bitcoin was not purchased.

Bearish risks remain real: preferred security obligations create fixed cash demands that Bitcoin's volatility can strain. Multiple security classes competing for the same liquidity pool is the structural constraint Saylor's critics have flagged since 2021.

The MSCI Problem

On a parallel front, CEO Phong Le and Michael Saylor formally requested MSCI withdraw an index classification rule that could remove $MSTR from global equity benchmarks. The rule targets companies whose primary asset is digital tokens. Strategy argues it unfairly singles them out.

The stakes are institutional: MSCI inclusion keeps passive index funds holding $MSTR. Removal would trigger mandatory selling by those funds, measured in the billions. A company that built its identity around Bitcoin purity is now fighting to stay inside the traditional equity index architecture. The tension is real and it is materializing in public filings.

$MSTR pulled back from $144.92 on September 3 to $136.52 on September 8. Analyst consensus price target stands at $236.41. The most bullish case, from Benchmark's Mark Palmer, sits at $473, contingent on the mNAV premium re-expanding on institutional adoption.

The On-Chain Counterpoint

While Strategy navigates its balance sheet, Bitcoin's on-chain structure is sending a different message. SOPR is in its longest bullish run of 2026, now entering week 4. Short-term holders are selling at a profit without triggering panic. Long-term holders showing losses at this scale have historically preceded recoveries, not prolonged bears.

The data says the market is not capitulating. The institutional packaging around Bitcoin is under stress. The underlying asset is not.
