Bitcoin at $79,522 on Day 860: What 1,000 EH/s Hashrate and STH Capitulation Signal About the Correction

August 28, 2026

Bitcoin's mining hashrate crossed 1,000 exahashes per second this month, the highest computational security the network has ever seen. Difficulty sits at 127.48 terahashes. The base layer has never been stronger.

At $79,522 on Day 860 post-halving, the gap between network fundamentals and price performance is one of the defining features of this cycle.

The Mining Signal: Hash Ribbons and Network Resilience

!Bitcoin Exchange Reserve Proxy — 9-Year Low Signals Sustained Accumulation

Hash ribbons measure miner capitulation. When the 30-day hashrate moving average crosses below the 60-day, miners are leaving the network. The reverse cross has historically preceded some of Bitcoin's sharpest recoveries.

At 1,000 EH/s, no such signal is triggering. Miners are adding machines, not removing them. Difficulty at 127.48T reflects a competitive market where new hardware is being deployed. For operators with efficient ASICs, the economics remain viable despite BTC trading roughly 28% below its 2026 highs.

The risk: miners who expanded near the cycle peak are holding hardware purchased at higher break-even costs. A sustained move into extended bear territory would change the calculus for marginal operators.

What STH Capitulation and Whale Flows Say

The STH-SOPR ratio has been sitting at 0.8 through much of August. Any reading below 1.0 means short-term holders are selling at a loss. At 0.8, the loss realization is meaningful.

Meanwhile, whale wallets holding 100 or more BTC have added roughly 54,400 BTC over the past two weeks, even as smaller holders exit. Exchange reserves sit at 2.21 million BTC, a nine-year low. Coins are leaving exchanges and entering cold storage.

This pattern, large holders accumulating while short-term holders exit under pressure, appeared before the October 2023 recovery and the March 2024 breakout. It is not a guarantee. It is a documented behavioral pattern across cycles.

The Caution

STH capitulation can persist for months. The 2022 bear market produced multiple rounds of apparent bottom formation before the real floor in November. Macro headwinds remain real.

Strategy holds 840,447 BTC with a total cost basis of $63.4 billion. In August, the company raised $334 million through equity sales without purchasing additional Bitcoin. Its cash reserve now sits at $4.8 billion. The world's most committed corporate Bitcoin buyer is watching current prices without adding.

The on-chain setup is constructive. Macro and corporate behavior tell a more cautious story.
