The September Curse Is Breaking: What On-Chain Data Says About Bitcoin's Seasonal Pivot

September 1, 2026

Bitcoin's on-chain profitability reading crossed above 1.01 at the close of August 2026, rising from sub-1.0 readings in mid-month. That single data point carries more weight than any seasonal headline: coins moving on-chain are doing so at a profit, and the trend is accelerating into what has historically been Bitcoin's worst calendar month.

September averaged a -3.4% return across all post-2013 cycles, dragged down by brutal drawdowns: -19% in 2014, -14% in 2019, -8% in 2020. The narrative of "Rektember" became self-reinforcing. Traders sold in anticipation of selling. The pattern held for nine consecutive years.

Then 2023 broke it: +4%. Then 2024: +8%. Then 2025: +3%. Three straight green Septembers, and on-chain data entering 2026's edition is the strongest it has been at this seasonal inflection point in years.

The On-Chain Picture

Aggregate coin dormancy rose to 1.70K in August 2026, matching accumulation patterns from the 2020-21 cycle's mid-phase. When coins sit dormant at this scale, it signals holders are not distributing. They are waiting. Combined with the profitability reading above 1.01, the data profile looks less like a market about to roll over and more like one digesting before a continuation move.

Spot BTC ETF cumulative net flows did flip negative for the first time since the January 2024 launch, a legitimate headwind. But context matters: VanEck tracked $663 million in ETP inflows across the 30 days ending mid-August, roughly $22 million per day. The negative flip reflects short-term positioning rotation, not structural outflow from the asset class.

The Macro Overhang

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh used Jackson Hole on August 28 to deliver a clear inflation warning. CME FedWatch now prices a 57.5% probability of a rate hike by October or December. That is the single largest risk variable hanging over Bitcoin at $77,187: tighter financial conditions reduce speculative appetite and dollar-liquidity globally.

But the halving cycle provides a structural offset. Day 864 post-halving places Bitcoin precisely in the phase where supply contraction from the April 2024 halving is fully embedded in miner economics. Post-halving cycles have historically taken 12 to 18 months to fully price in the supply shock. Day 864 sits squarely in that window.

What September 2026 Needs

The base case for a fourth consecutive green September requires two things: the profitability ratio holding above 1.0 through mid-month (confirming profitable on-chain activity persists) and ETF flows stabilizing or turning positive on any positive macro data. A softer jobs print or CPI surprise could shift the Fed narrative fast.

The bear case is straightforward: a rate hike confirmation before October, combined with the profitability ratio breaking back below 1.0, would signal distribution is accelerating. That scenario puts the prior demand zone, roughly 7-8% below current spot, in play.

At $77,187, Bitcoin is not in crisis. It is at a seasonal crossroads with unusually strong on-chain backing. The September curse ran for nine years on momentum and fear. The data says that regime ended in 2023. Three data points do not make a permanent pattern, but they are enough to stop treating "Rektember" as a certainty.
