Marvell Technology fell more than 7% in after-hours trading Thursday after reporting its fiscal second-quarter results. The stock had risen 187% year-to-date before the print. Nvidia reported a strong quarter this week. The AI infrastructure spending cycle remains intact. Marvell still fell 7%.
This is what expectations look like when they price in perfection.
The Valuation Math
!$MRVL: +170% YTD Into Earnings — Then Reality Hit
A stock up 187% in eight months is not priced on current results. It is priced on a specific trajectory of future results. Any deviation from that trajectory, even a strong quarter that does not exceed what the market already assumed, registers as a miss.
Marvell's most recent reported quarter showed $2.42 billion in revenue, up 27.6% year-over-year. The company has more than 50 custom XPU opportunities in its pipeline and a $10 billion custom revenue target. Its scale-out switch segment is projected to exceed $600 million, doubling from the prior year. By historical standards, these are strong results.
The market had priced better than strong.
Nvidia Is Not Marvell
Nvidia reported this week and the stock responded positively: the market confirmed that its earnings justified its valuation. Marvell's after-hours drop tells a different story: the market decided that 187% in less than a year was not justified by the results.
This divergence matters. The AI hardware trade is no longer rewarding sector exposure. It is rewarding demonstrated dominance within the sector.
Nvidia dominates training silicon and inference at scale. Marvell competes for custom silicon contracts against Broadcom and against hyperscaler in-house teams building their own chips (Google TPU v5, AWS Trainium, Apple Neural Engine). Competition is healthy for customers. It is hard on multiples.
The Broader Read
AI infrastructure spending is real. Multi-hundred-percent gains in semiconductor names have priced in years of compounding in a single run. When growth materializes but does not accelerate beyond the projected path, the math reverses.
Bearish risk: if AI chip economics compress as competition intensifies, companies competing for market share face prolonged multiple contraction even as fundamentals remain healthy.
The AI hardware trade bifurcates from here. Dominant players justify their gains. Everyone else faces recalibration.
