$1.26 Billion Exits Bitcoin ETFs in Six Straight Days

May 26, 2026

Six consecutive trading days. $1.26 billion out. Bitcoin spot ETFs just posted their longest outflow streak of 2026, pulling year-to-date net inflows down to $536 million.

BlackRock's IBIT recorded $68.9 million in outflows on Friday alone. Fidelity's FBTC followed at $36.3 million. Together, the two largest funds drove the week's selling. Despite the streak, IBIT retains the dominant position in institutional Bitcoin exposure. What this data reflects is tactical trimming, not structural exits.

The Institutional Calculus

ETF outflows in isolation are a poor signal. Context is everything.

Bitcoin has held above $100,000 through the six-day drawdown, suggesting spot selling pressure has not overwhelmed bid depth. ETF outflows in this environment typically reflect institutions reducing gross exposure, not liquidating conviction. A fund manager managing duration risk in a rising-yield environment will cut liquid positions first. Bitcoin ETFs are liquid.

The 10-year Treasury yield has remained elevated through May as bond markets absorb the fiscal implications of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the legislation adds $3.4 trillion to federal debt by 2034, pushing the United States toward debt-to-GDP levels the IMF projects will exceed Greece and Italy. S&P (2011), Fitch (2023), and Moody's (2025) have all downgraded U.S. sovereign debt. Each downgrade applied upward pressure to yields. Elevated yields compress risk-adjusted returns across asset classes, and when liquidity demands rise, institutional managers sell what they can sell quickly.

Bitcoin ETFs fit that description precisely.

What Onchain Says

Onchain data tells a different story than ETF flows. Long-term holders (coins held 155 days or more) continue to accumulate. Short-term holder cost basis for recent buyers sits close to current price levels, keeping unrealized losses contained. The onchain supply picture suggests the Bitcoin base is consolidating in strong hands even as the institutional wrapper experiences outflows.

This divergence, ETF bleeding while onchain accumulates, has appeared before. The Q1 2024 post-halving period saw similar dynamics, with ETF outflows preceding a significant inflow resumption once yields stabilized.

Bearish risks remain real. A streak extending past 10 consecutive days or outflows exceeding $300 million in a single session would signal something more than tactical trimming. The YTD net inflow cushion of $536 million is thin. A few more sessions at current pace flips the 2026 annual figure negative.

The Nvidia Signal

On May 20, Nvidia reported Q1 FY2027 results that beat Wall Street's $78.5 billion consensus, with data center revenue nearly doubling year-over-year and the company announcing an $80 billion addition to its share buyback program. Despite the beat, the stock declined. Markets are pricing in questions about Vera Rubin supply ramp timelines, AMD's Helios competition, and the scope of China H200 access.

AI infrastructure spending at this scale is structurally inflationary, absorbing capital in ways that keep yields elevated and fiscal deficits wide. The same fiscal environment driving ETF outflows is the one that makes Bitcoin's supply cap significant over any multi-year horizon.
